To date, the need for such programs, given the widespread media attention and public education about the disease, is not fully documented. We report on a longitudinal study of a hospital staffs knowledge about AIDS, as well as their perceptions of the risks and stresses associated with the care of AIDS patients. We evaluated the extent to which attendance at inservice programs is associated with improvements in AIDS-related knowledge and with decreases in negative attitudes. METHODS In April 1985 we surveyed professional and technical employees at the major AIDS treatment center in Massachusetts, a 500bed teaching hospital to which approximately 60 AIDS patients had been admitted by the time of the survey.
